I saw Merzbow + Keiji Haino + Joy Heights (Otomo Yoshihide band) at a basketball court at Kyoto University of Art and Design last Saturday. It was great - high ceiling with a moon projection and two big tree trunks for the proscenium arch. The Haino audience was mostly silent but the Joy Heights audience screamed and stabbed black-nailpolish heavy metal signs at the band. Haino played electric guitar over a loud drone, sang and played a small acoustic ukelele-sized thing - really twangy - played three theremin-like pods that howled feedback at varying frequency when he waved his hands over them, and then finished with some amazing screaming. My ears are still ringing.
