The Dead C - Patience

There's a new Dead C album out on Ba Da Bing - Patience, the band's first release in a couple of years. It's all instrumental, 4 tracks ranging from under 2 minutes to over 16, and one of their finest releases in a while. The sound harks back to "classic" Dead C releases like Trapdoor Fucking Exit or Harsh 70s Reality but taking it in new directions. The publicity blurb lays it out: "Patience captures a restless band who never settle into any form. The trio of Michael Morley, Bruce Russell and Robbie Yeats are able to make their improvised music sound like the most substantial thing ever recorded, no matter in what direction they go.

So I tried to piece together some kind of overview/history of what was happening in NZ back when the site was first put together - here's what I came up with. Keep in mind that this was written pretty long ago now, and many things have changed. A few little updates have been made, but overall it's what was first put online. At least for archival purposes the content below may be useful.

Discography

The last decade saw some impressive free outfits popping up all over New Zealand, for our purposes the most important (given that these are the only ones you're likely to hear and the only ones I can think of just now) being Thela, Surface of the Earth and Sandoz Lab Technicians. The latter released their first album on Siltbreeze in 1996. The album kind of falls flat in some parts, works well in others, but is promising and should be listened to. As usual, there are the obligatory never-to-be heard singles, but maybe you'll get lucky. There's also an album on The Lotus Sound, titled The Tale of Pixielamb. A lot more, um, determined than the first LP, this sounds very good.

Complete Discography (as of 2007)

THE DEAD C. are Michael Morley, Robbie Yeats and Bruce Russell on all releases, with occasional others.
